Bout of Books 6.0 Challenge- Vampires in Popular Fiction!!!!!!

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon
Yay, its Challenge Time!!! *dances*

Ok... I lurve me some vampires. Not just in books, but films and tv shows too... nothing like some retro Buffy the Vampire Slayer to make your day brighter.

So I was thinking a while back, as one casually does, if I had to pick, who would be my favourite vampire, and why? And then I fretted about it for a while and I made a list (this was really bugging me) because I just couldn't decide, and then Amanda and Kelly put out the call for Bout of Books 6.0 Challenges... And I thought "Yes!! You guys, you lovely readathon readers of many books, can answer for me!!" I'm pointing at you, yes, you, right now btw.

So, WHO are your favourite vampires? And WHY??
I want everyone to name one guy vamp and one lady vamp (and the books/series they are from, just so everyone knows), and explain why they have a place in your heart as your super most favourite vampires everrr. You will win bonus points for creativity of your explanations. "I love him" isn't a good enough explanation for me, I'm afraid. And remember, no one is wrong if they can explain their answer, but you can be more right than other people.

And then tomorrow I'll take a looksy at your answers and try to amalgamate them all together into some kind of ultimately popular vampire thing, based on mass opinion and the hilarity of answers. No prizes, I'm afraid, other than the knowledge that you made your vampy love known to all the world.... ha, that was dramatic... I'll rephrase... to some of the Bout of Books 6.0 participants.

And.... go!

  1. I've been so burned out of the Vampire genre but I fell in love with Lord Alkedema from Gail Carriger's Soulless series.

As for female vamps I'd have to say the Queen from season two of True blood, cant remember her name! Happy reading!

    1. Yeah, its so easy to get fed up of one genre, especially when it gets so overly popular. Great answers though.

  2. I think she's Sophie Ann something..lol :D

  3. I would have to say for female Pam from True Blood and for men I'd say Damon from Vampire Diaries. These are both kind of sarcastic and funny! That's my favorite kind of character! :D

    1. Fantastic suggestions! Pam is a wonderful character in both the books and TV series- her dry sarcasm is exactly my type of humour!

  4. For male I would pick Spike, he made me crack up so much on Buffy. First of all that peroxide blond updo with his long leather duster coat and those blazé lines, he was such a memorable character! (and loved when he got all sweet and starry-eyed about Buffy :-D) And boy could he sing.. So he was one of the best characters of the show :-)

As for a female vamp is Caroline in Vampire Diaries. Her transition and how she tried to master her urges and power at the beginning was just so funny and entertaining :-D

Thank you for the fun challenge!

    1. Loveee Spike <3 He was so interesting because he was funny, scary and vulnerable all at the same time!

    2. Yes, Spike was a great character, especially when he was being very reluctantly good. I remember liking him much more once he began to fall for Buffy.

Caroline is great too, although in the most recent few episodes her behaviour has reminded me too much of how she was pre-change.

      Glad you enjoyed it!

  5. Oki just because i really like your idea ( i should be reading!!)

favorite male vampire Bones from the night huntress series by Jeaniene Frost because he has a lot of humour, his powers are so great ( i mean nearly becoming a skeleton and still regenerate in matters of hors, telepathy is also really fun) but more important for me he is terribly loyal, persistent and honest ( if he said he won(t cut you he won't but he still will blow you up, strangle you or burn you just the cutting thing will be avoided^^;;)

For the female that was a bit harder because idon't know so many so i will pick Randa from the Penton Legacy serie by Suzanne Sandlin, she wasn't born vampire and grew up in a military familly with several brother so she is though but that hard exterior hide a lot of insecurity and she is really intelligent

    1. I've had the Night Huntress Series on my to-be-read list for what seems like forever, but have never come across a copy of the first book (I blame my tiny local library)- but having read so many good things about Bones I may have to invest in a copy.

Randa seems like a really well-rounded character- I'll have to check out this series too! Thanks for commenting!

  6. Cat and Bones from Night Huntress Series! Why? Well....besides the fact that they are bad ass, I will say nothing besides....
    Chapter 32!!

    That's it...I win!

  7. Well, this is going to require some thought to decide on just ONE, so I'm going to ruminate on it while I'm at work.

However, I just have to say that this is the first time I've been to your blog, and I LOVE your blog name. I'm a Friends fanatic, so it makes me super happy. :) New follower!

  9. I have to admit, I'm actually not a big fan of vampires (please don't hurt me!). But one vampire book that I really, really like is Sunshine by Robin McKinley. I like that the vampires are actually dangerous (as in, they will totally kill you) and not very sexy. But the book's hero, Constantine, manages to overcome his predatory nature and fall in love (sort of) with a human woman.

    1. No worries, everyone has some kind of genre that they generally don't read. I personally am not that keen on dystopian type books, unless they are really exceptional (loved Divergent). I've added Sunshine to my tbr list- if someone who isn't a fan of vampires likes it, it must be pretty good to change your mind.

  10. Haven't read too many vampire books. So I will go with Carlisle and his wife from Twilight Series. I love them both. They are compassionate and loving. Wait, doesn't that go against the whole vampire thing? Oh, well.

    1. Haha, I think it only goes against the stereotype. It must take so much strength to fight your nature to remain so caring and compassionate, so I have lots of respect for the Cullens in that sense. Thanks for commenting.

  11. This is a hard question but here goes: My favorite male vampire would have to be Matthew Clairmont from A Discovery of Witches. He is super sexy and swoon-worthy. He is also smart, loyal and brave. He will do what it takes to keep Diana safe. He is quite the package. Now for a female vampire: Hmmm...this is the hard one. I guess I will go with Lenah from Infinite Days. She isn't your typical vampire and I liked that.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've never read Discovery of Witches so I have not become acquainted with Matthew but I like your answer to your fave female :) Lenah is a great choice! Definitely not typical. She reminds me of Kirsten Dunst's character in Interview With A Vampire. She's sweet and innocent looking but a total killer. That is until...

    2. Yet another book that has been lurking on my TBR list for far too long! Looking forward to reading about Matthew Clairmont now. Thanks for commenting!

  12. If you're talking TV then it is Spike, hands down. Because he is hot, funny, sensitive and he grows and changes throughout the series. The real reason though is because I love him. No, I really, really do.

If you're talking books then I have to go with Eric Northman because he is just too cool for this world and the vampire world in general. I also like him because he is kind of sneaky and who doesn't want to get their way.

For female vamps...I'll say Pam from the Sookie Stackhouse books as well because she is so put together. Not what you'd excpect from a vampire. She's like uber secretary vampire.

    1. I love your choices! Eric Northman is definitely high up on my list, in both the books and the TV series. He has this amazing charisma and there is a sense of control and power that he seems to have over every situation. Thanks for commenting!

  13. Vampires are not really my favorite thing....however I do have a couple of standouts who I have found and loved.

My favorite dude vamp is Stefan from Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series. He's really scary and really undead, but he also drives a Volkswagon van and tries to be kind as much as possible and is hilarious. He's like a monster (a really gross undead one) who tries not to be as much as possible, and it's really crushing to watch him try, but most of the time he stays....upbeat. For a vampire, haha.

I don't know if TV shows count, but my favorite lady is probably Drusilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She is completely out of her mind and terrifying and adorable and I love the dresses she wears. She has some of the best lines in the show, e.g., "I'm giving all the stars the same name. There's terrible confusion!" and "I was dreaming. We were in Paris. You had a branding iron." etc etc forever.

    1. I love Drusilla! I do remember watching Buffy when I was maybe 9 years old and finding her absolutely terrifying, but now I find that her psychosis has a great edge of humour to it! Thanks for commenting!

  16. In books I really don't know who I would choose if any.

As for TV shows I always loved Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was tough, funny, sarcastic and had a soft side. His character developed and changed a lot in the series maybe more than any of the other characters on the series. Though Damon from The Vampire Diaries is delicious. He also is tough, funny, sarcastic, vulnerable and quite charming. Both men aren't tortured by the fact they are vampires. They like being vampires. If I had to choose between the two it would be very difficult. I guess I would probably choose Damon as my favorite male vampire.

Choosing a female vampire is a little easier. The only female vampire that stands out the most for me is Drusilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I always loved watching her scenes on the show. She was insane and creepy. She had a childlike innocence but could be such a coldhearted killer.

    1. I had the same dilemma between Damon and Spike for my favourite tv vampire- its such a close call!

Dru was fantastic- I always found her voice and creepy one liners to be much more intimidating (but also creepily hilarious) than the other vampires on the show.
      Thanks for commenting!

  17. I know a lot of male vampires from books/series/movies I love but it was quite hard to get a lady vamp for this challenge. I used two movies from two movie series (haven't read that many vampire books or watched that many vampire series). Hope it's okay ;-)

  18. My favourite male vampire is Kanin from Julie Kagawa's The Immortal Rules. Unlike the new type of vampires everyone seems to fall for these days, Kanin is your traditional vampire, who has a shady past. He was only in The Immortal Rules briefly but his mysterious character has definitely left me wanting more. My favourite female vampire is Allie from The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa. Allie left a great impression on me, she was fierce, fearless, but also still in touch with so many of her previous human emotions. I can't wait to see what they both have to offer in the next book.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks for commenting! I haven't read The Immortal Rules, but your reasons sounds great. I think its always hard for vampire characters to find a balance between humanity and emotions and some kind of vampire/killer nature without them seeming sappy, but Allie seems to have a good balance of the two (based upon what you said).

  20. The lady vampire: I'll have to pick Pam from the Southern Vampire mysteries by Charlaine Harris. She has a strange sense of humor, she has quite forgotten her humanity, but she is loyal and fond of Sookie.

The guy vampire: This one is hard, but the vampire I'm more fond of would be Stefan, from the Mercy Thompson books by Patricia Briggs. He genuinely tries to be a good guy, and something in his personality strikes me as quirky and fun.

Thank you for hosting this challenge! ;)

    1. Thanks for joining in! Pam is fantastic. She manages to hold her own as a character without fitting into any stereotypes- I love how she prefers to dress in pastels and very "anti stereotypical vampire" clothing, and yet she is not a soft person in any regard!

  21. My Favourite Vampire Characters:-

Nicholas Drake @ The Drake Chronicles by Alyxandra Harvey
I was going to choose Edward Cullen, not Robert Pattison the actor but Edward the actual character within the book. However, I find Nicholas to be more balanced (read not obsessive/possesive to the border of scary LOL).

I love Nicholas because of how he interacted with other characters in the series. Nicholas is an obedient child to his parents, he is sweet and protective without being overbearing towards his only baby sister and a caring and loving gentleman to his sister's human best friend, Lucy, his love interest.

I know I've made him look like a saint, but saints can be kinda boring...Nicholas is far from boring he is also funny, sarcastic and loves to play pranks on the girls. He is your typical big brother, jerk at times but comes to the crunch he is loving and protective. A typical young man who is teasing towards Lucy but scrape the surface it's only because he adores her.

We all know people like that...at the time of normalcy you just want to strangle them but at the times of hardship they become your rock.

Pearl @ Drink, Slay, Love by Sarah Beth Durst
I love Pearl as she's perfectly balanced. She's flirty, sarcastic, even imature and annoying at times but at the time that matters the most her inner strength comes through.

Pearl saves hundreds of her fellow High School students from their imminent death, despite knowing the consequences; the knowledge that by saving "humans" she will be abandoned by her family, outcasted by her kind AND hunted down by all Vampires, she still chose the right path, that's what I call courageous! I thoroughly enjoy characters like Pearl because she's real! Far from perfect but with pure heart and genuine intentions.

Helena Drake @ The Drake Chronicles by Alyxandra Harvey
Helena Drake is a secondary choice. I love her because she's a typical mother who will do anything and everything for her family. Despite being a vampire she is also just your typical Mother who has mostly boys. She's comical in the way she disciplines her boys but at the same time she's a welcoming and beautiful person within.

In other words, if your good to her family she's a beautiful person who will do anything for you, try to kill or upset or endanger any of her young ones and you will feel the wrath of a Mother who is also a top fighting vampire on top of that LOL

    1. Wow, fantastic answers!! You have put so much thought into this!! Characters is are more complicated and not easily shoved into one box/stereotype are, I find, much more interesting, and I'm much more likely to follow these types of characters through several books in a series.
I've added all these books to my tbr list- several people have mentioned the Drake Chronicles, which makes me feel like I'm really missing a trick. Thanks for commenting!

  29. So, having read all of your comments and having been totally overwhelmed by the sheer number (and variety/creativity) of answers, I have come up with some conclusions. (Highly scientific ones, I might add.)
    1. Spike is the ultimate in tv male vampire-ness. You guys love his one liners and evil plotting, as well as watching him go all gooey over Buffy!
    2. Loads of you have girl crushes on Kate Beckingsale as Selene in the Underworld films- plus she is such a total bad-ass.
    3. Favourite Vampire dude (from books) appears to be fairly split between Eric from the Southern Vampire Mysteries (by Charlaine Harris), and Bones from the Night Huntress series.
    4. Favourite Vampire gal is more divided, but Pam from the Southern Vampire Mysteries (by Charlaine Harris) and Cat from the Night Huntress series seem to be the front runners.
    5. I really need to check out The Night Huntress for the fabled chapter 32. Yes, I said that in slightly hushed tones.
